Description

My practice usually begins with an image that cannot be explained. I do not start with a predetermined narrative or a fully formed concept. Instead, I use oil pastels to bring that image into reality. Only after the work is completed do I step back and begin to look at it from a distance. Francis Bacon has profoundly influenced the way I understand the human body and painting. However, I have no desire to repeat his visual language. What interests me more is whether an image can preserve the unfamiliarity it possessed when it first appeared, and whether it can continue to draw the viewer’s gaze without demanding an immediate explanation.
